The flip side of happiness

Would I be repeating myself, just a lil' bit, to say here how happy Liam makes me?... yeah, I think so. Having said that though, there are definite consequences to having a little person in your life. Yesterday, that meant being up all night with the little man, who we think is going through another round of teething; for the past week he's had red cheeks, a runny nose, and a very grumpy disposition. I thought losing an hour of sleep to the clocks changing would be bad enough, but as it turns out, a cranky, sleepless baby makes things that much worse. This can be rather a big deal when you only have so many free hours on the weekend to cram in chores and homework and also as much action-packed fun (such as this trip to the park) as possible. A nap would have been possible, I suppose, but the lure of everything else was just too great.

Yet another drawback to the whole baby thing reared its ugly head at work today. Taking a year off work is a big deal, and I get that, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity, given that so many don't. But that doesn't make it a whole lot easier to bear to see people promoted ahead of you who used to be behind you, or great jobs posted on the job board that, if the timing were different, you might try for; but how can you walk out on your current position when they've been holding it for you for a year to come back to? Luckily, even at the end of a long and taxing day, there's a smiling little face to come home to; and when it's not smiling, it's usually pretty cute, anyway, even when it's busy deliberately refusing its regular dinner just to see if you will cave and provide it with Cheerios instead; and, when you do, deliberately chucking them onto the floor to see how far you'll go to retrieve them (not so far little guy, eh??)

Anyway... looking forward to more fun days in the park like this one... we were teased with some great weather there for a few days and now, not so much... but it's bound to be back soon. I had it on good authority on the weekend that Liam might be getting a little wagon for his birthday. Looking forward to that. :)
